ASSOCIATION OF CONSECRATED WOMEN IN ERITREA (ACWE)

The National Association of Consecrated women in Eritrea was established in 1995. At the time of its foundation it was named Association of Religious Women of Eritrea (ARWE). The Association became a member of the Association of Consecrated Women in Eastern and Central Africa (ACWECA) in 1997. In 2011 the original name was changed to its current name, that is, Association of Consecrated Women of Eritrea (ACWE).

At present ACWE’s membership comprises 10 Congregations and/or Institutes which are full members and 5 Congregations/Institutes that are associate members. The association members are rather small in number. The Associate members are encouraged to participate especially in the various formation programs run by ACWE. The total number of sisters in the Association as of February 2020 is 765 Sisters serving in Arch-Eparchy of Asmara and in the Eparchies of Keren, Barentu and Segheneiti.

Mission:

Enlightened and guided by the Word of God, the association commits itself to:

  • Provide adequate formative programs to its members, to empower them by better equipping them for an effective evangelization work in the society.
  • Enhance the spirit of working together for mutual support and effective collaborative ministries.
  • Create space and time for spiritual growth together.
  • To face the current political, social, economic and religious challenges in a spirit of communion and hope.
Core Values

Spiritual Life: We are convinced that our spiritual life is the pivotal aspect of our call, the source of our strength and wisdom both internally and externally. Hence, we are committed to fostering ever deeper spiritual life among the members of the Association.
Collaborative Spirit: We believe that we can accomplish much more in our mission working together in a spirit of collaboration.
The need to be ‘wounded healers’: In a society so much wounded, we recognize our wounds and the wounds of our people. We believe the need to help ourselves to be healed so as to be ‘wounded healers’ in the example of Lord Jesus Christ in our various ministries.

Activities carried out by ACWE
  • Various services at congregation levels that include Christian formation, formal and informal education, women promotion.
  • Inter-Congregational Formative programs for postulants, novices, Sisters of temporary vows and on-going formation for sisters of final vows. We follow the main points of focus of ACWECA, that is, Formation at all levels, family and youth, JPIC and other particular needs in locally. Some of the programs are done in collaboration with CMRS.
  • Joined prayer programs.
