ZAMBIA ASSOCIATION OF SISTERHOODS (ZAS)

The Zambia Association of Sisterhoods is an Ecclesial Organization of pontifical right, which relates to the Congregation for the Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, (CICLSAL). It was founded in 1958. The membership of ZAS is from religious institutes and societies of apostolic life who formerly apply to join the Association.

The Association has a membership of 45 local and international religious congregations with a total number of well over 1,500 sisters who are serving in Zambia. It has eleven (11) administrative branches throughout the country with a well-established elective executive committee.

The Branches of the Association follow the administrative political boundaries of the country. Although the Country is divided into ten (10) provinces, the Catholic Church has eleven (11) dioceses, two of which are Archdioceses. The following constitute ZAS branches; Chipata, Kabwe, Kasama, Livingstone, Lusaka, Mansa, Mongu, Monze, Mpika, Ndola and Solwezi.

The Association has working committees at national level that respond to different spiritual, social and developmental needs of the members. The committees include: –
  • Prayer Companion Committee
  • Mentors and Facilitators for participative Living Committee
  • Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Committee
  • Sister to Sister Project, and
  • Fundraising Committee
Meanwhile, the Association implements the following social and developmental programmes/projects:
  • ASEC Programme
  • SCORE-ECD Programme
  • Catholic Care for Children (CCC)
  • Sister’s Initiative (SI)

 ZAS owns and runs Kalundu Study Centre (KSC), a formation and leadership institution that has been in existence since 1972. This is an International Institution that offers a one year Formation and Leadership course. The Institution has since inception trained over 1,000 sisters from both within and outside Zambia.

In 2014/2015 ZAS embarked on the process of developing its Strategic Plan that runs from 2015 to 2020, in which its Vision and Mission are articulated.
