CONFERENCE OF MAJOR RELIGIOUS SUPERIORS (CMRS) IN ETHIOPIA

The Conference of Major Religious Superiors (CMRS) in Ethiopia is the coming together of all the Religious congregations present in Ethiopia. CMRS – Ethiopia was established in 1971 to coordinate the presence of the religious in the country, and to strengthen the Formation of young and consecrated persons in Ethiopia. This is done in collaboration with the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Ethiopia and the Nunciature.

To date, Ethiopia is home to 54 Religious Congregations spread all over the country; many working in pastoral and charitable activities. These include: running health units, schools, day-care centres and orphanages and homes for abandoned children and various development projects like house constructions, toilet building, agriculture, etc.

CMRS – Ethiopia has its offices and present facilities located in Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia. These facilities are used to hold seminars, workshops, courses/talks and trainings as well as the annual General Assembly for the Major Religious Superiors. There is also a Library for public use.

Objectives
  • To make known our identity in the Church and in the wider society.
  • To ensure continuity of the programmes through the board of trustees
  • To strengthen all formation programmes, in particular English programme
  • To ensure financial sustainability
  • To explore the setting up of the counselling programmes, to respond to spiritual and psychosocial needs.
  • To promote research on youth vocational fragility and legal issues.
  • To promote responsible use of social communication through training
  • To enhance income generating and local resource mobilisation.

The policy, purpose and general goals of the Conference:

  • To deepen the quality of Religious life as lived in Ethiopia.
  • To cooperate and plan together in those areas agreed upon by the General Assembly.
  • To work collaboratively with the Episcopal Conference, the Papal Nuncio, the bishops and ordinaries of the various dioceses, vicariates and prefectures.
  • To help each institute achieve more fully its aims, while respecting its autonomy, as well as dealing with affairs common to all the members.
  • Provide adequate formative programs to its members, to empower them by better equipping them for an effective evangelization work in the society.
  • Enhance the spirit of working together for mutual support and effective collaborative ministries.
  • Create space and time for spiritual growth together.
  • To face the current political, social, economic and religious challenges in a spirit of communion and hope.
Vision

We are Consecrated men and women, inspired by the word of God, Spirit filled, an active integral part of the Church, rooted in the love of Christ, dynamic, who live the prophetic vocation, through evangelising the gospel values, according to the signs of the times. We create a place where holistic programmes can be offered, in-culturating ourselves witnessing unity in diversity.

Mission

To build God’s kingdom, through Holistic quality formation with proper identity and service as lived in Ethiopia.

To assist each congregation to achieve its goal, in collaboration with the local church.

Goal

To deepen the quality of Religious life as lived in Ethiopia, to cooperate and plan together in those areas agreed upon by the General Assembly.

CMRS has 37 women religious and apostolic communities working in Ethiopia.
